Sycamore and Oak was conceived by Sir David Adjaye as well as the ownership group at Emerson Collective and Redbrick LMD. The pavilion now acts as a “retail activation” and community space for the larger mixed-use St. Elizabeth's development in the East DC area.

The primary structure is prefabricated timber components, designed for future dis-assembly and relocation. It features DLT throughout, including the mezzanine and platform areas. The architect and owner envisioned the DLT as the walking surface of the platform. However, to allow for drainage, and to prevent high-heels from getting stuck between laminations, the DLT was designed with extra joints that allowed for natural swelling during installation but maintained an overall “tightly” constructed assembly. Additionally, the underside of the platform DLT is a concealed space and is thus coated with FX Lumberguard to address flame spread concerns.
